In order to develop an approach that takes into account the best available theories and techniques from all sectors of the field. The basis for a Christian approach will be laid in the first chapter by exploring the distinctives of this work practiced from a Christian perspective.  next, a step-by-step examination of the process of therapy will be undertaken.  Various approaches to clinical work will be selected and explored, based on their suitability and effectiveness in pastoral counseling. Therefore, the first two chapters of this project demonstrate a complete frame of reference for conducting marriage and family counseling including explication of a fully integrated biblical/theological rationale for such counseling interventions. The special third chapter on premarital counseling is included to emphasize the importance of this often over-looked resource in marriage and family counseling. The theoretical framework for marriage and family counseling ministry presented in this project is cogently informed by the literature review in the second chapter leading to a clear definition of stylistic differentials. An example of one preferred and experientially typical style of intervention is demonstrated in the fourth chapter through a comprehensive family case study. The case study includes essential components of evaluative and interventive planning, such as diagnostic tools and apparatus, description and assessment of individual and family system dynamics, conceptualization process and development of a cohesive treatment plan using cognitive-behavioral therapy, family systems therapy, and resources for spiritual formation, growth, and discipleship. The comprehensive treatment plan is followed in the fifth chapter by a critical evaluation and analysis of how the case has actually progressed to date. Nine couples participated in a study designed to teach husbands and wives how to pray for each other in the context of daily life. The Intimacy Needs Survey (Bagarozzi, 2001) was used as the pretest-posttest instrument to measure changes in the couple's perception of intimacy. Analysis of the raw scores indicated 89 percent of the couples reported an average of 30 percent increase in intimacy. Interchurch has been narrowly defined for the purposes of this study as a couple where one partner is Roman Catholic and the other practices another Christian tradition. Utilizing the Narrative Inquiry research method, the author explores the stories shared by interchurch facilitators of marriage preparation programs and interchurch engaged couples in an effort to develop a relevant marriage preparation session for interchurch couples. The author argues for an active marriage ministry, particularly in the Roman Catholic tradition dominated by a celibate clerical hierarchy. Research involved interviews with leaders in marriage ministry, personal involvement in creating a marriage ministry in a Roman Catholic parish in Chicago, and the development of a research model exploring couples' experience of shared prayer.
