Its aim is to help Jordanian Christian couples who have marital conflicts, because of the intervention of the husband's family of origin (especially his mother), to reach a better marital life. In Jordanian culture, parents demand their son's obedience and expect that their daughterinlaw will serve them. These two issues create conflicts among marital couples and affect their marital life negatively. Throughout therapy couples can change their negative beliefs into positive ones and understand the biblical truth concerning their marriages without hurting cultural truth. They are not dead because both husbands and wives still live together; they are not separated or divorced. The marriage is not alive either because the union has become sour, bitter, and burdensome. In the search to find out how best to reverse this trend, communication skills stand out as one solution. The project is a research into literature from leading authorities in both secular and religious communities on communication skills with particular reference to strengthening marital relationships. Care was taken in the selection of materials to assure sound biblical foundation. The materials selected were used to develop lesson plans for training couples in communication that leads to relationship building. The purpose of this project was to train a select group of married couples of Shepherdhill Baptist Church, Lagos, Nigeria in communication skills to strengthen marriage. The training sessions focused on developing participants in communication that builds up relationships with the overall goal of producing a healthy marital relationship that leads to security and stability of Christian homes. The focus of the project is on verbal, face-to-face, communication between couples. Hence, the discussions during the seminars emphasized components of communication such as listening, self disclosure, and transparency. As the project progressed, it became obvious that participants, though vast in Bible knowledge, pay very little attention to applying biblical principles to their lifestyle. This meant that the discipleship programs which many of the participants attended and their personal Bible studies emphasized head knowledge rather than heart knowledge. What changes people is the application of Bible principles to everyday life, not just the hearing of the word, but the doing of the word. Therefore, the project emphasized application rather than theoretical knowledge of the Bible to achieve the desired goal. As a result of this finding, couples' ministry has been fully established in the church with monthly activities. These activities include continuous relationship evaluation, identifying strength and growth areas needed in relationship building, and teaching communication and conflict resolution skills that strengthen interpersonal relationships."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5e492469-490e-44a3-90c1-17560a603bc2"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718824238383104,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:40:19.428Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:54:08Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:48:16Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1e91a493-df00-4cb3-883a-2f213a368245","accessControl_ssim":["4841b5d0-5749-4a98-a9c8-6f5027192842"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Relationship theology: a model for producing healthy marriages in the African American context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:54:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:02:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bc1c66d5-1090-48f1-b1c8-f9f6b9d6b2f3"],"hasLease_ssim":["87a156b4-c858-4655-8104-108cff17a768"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Terry Thomas","Ricky A Woods"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Frances Murphy Draper"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African American families","John Wesley African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (Baltimore, Md)","Marriage counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project was to implement a biblically-based premarital counseling model for engaged couples at the John Wesley African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Baltimore, Maryland, in an effort to stem the tide of high divorce rates and low marriage rates among African Americans. The need for the various agencies to form teams with a coordinator to ensure all issues are covered will be uncovered."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131469643513856,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:47:59.906Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:23:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"128570a4-a0e9-407f-a683-c2fa554cb010","accessControl_ssim":["d6c85054-129c-479c-bb65-4624617cd6a8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A study of a framework for marital and family therapy in a pastoral context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:39:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4b925035-455c-4b6a-9ed1-b41758b53928"],"hasLease_ssim":["c9cb7c35-9775-4a5e-a609-b1bc3604d06a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Douglas S Walker"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Marriage counseling","Family counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study is to explore various aspects of marriage and family therapy in a pastoral setting. At the same time, the particular concerns and resources of the Christian community will be considered, so the final product is useful as a framework for conducting therapy in that distinctive setting. The basis for a Christian approach will be laid in the first chapter by exploring the distinctives of this work practiced from a Christian perspective. next, a step-by-step examination of the process of therapy will be undertaken. Various approaches to clinical work will be selected and explored, based on their suitability and effectiveness in pastoral counseling. Therefore, the first two chapters of this project demonstrate a complete frame of reference for conducting marriage and family counseling including explication of a fully integrated biblical/theological rationale for such counseling interventions. The special third chapter on premarital counseling is included to emphasize the importance of this often over-looked resource in marriage and family counseling. The theoretical framework for marriage and family counseling ministry presented in this project is cogently informed by the literature review in the second chapter leading to a clear definition of stylistic differentials. An example of one preferred and experientially typical style of intervention is demonstrated in the fourth chapter through a comprehensive family case study. The case study includes essential components of evaluative and interventive planning, such as diagnostic tools and apparatus, description and assessment of individual and family system dynamics, conceptualization process and development of a cohesive treatment plan using cognitive-behavioral therapy, family systems therapy, and resources for spiritual formation, growth, and discipleship. The comprehensive treatment plan is followed in the fifth chapter by a critical evaluation and analysis of how the case has actually progressed to date. Furthermore, this chapter describes how the case has contributed to the student practitioner's learning process."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131796564344832,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:53:11.682Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:49:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:21:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"584100b8-f425-4f72-ba30-bf777144d5d5","accessControl_ssim":["1992bbe7-477a-4649-9718-4c294ad37bfa"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping a selected group of married couples of the First Baptist Church of Alexander City, Alabama, to participate in a premarital counseling ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:49:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:43:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["26b25f76-394b-4fdc-918a-070e71a30f3c"],"hasLease_ssim":["76d850c0-91fb-4d8d-ae77-38dae595bfdf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Tate Cockrell"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Walter O Lowery"],"publisher_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["First Baptist Church (Alexander City, Ala)","Marriage counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project was to equip selected married couples of the First Baptist Church of Alexander City, AL, to participate in a premarital counseling ministry.
