Utilizing scriptural studies, in-class discussion, communication exercises, assignments for application of principles in the home, and inventories and counseling materials from ENRICH, couples were led to: develop greater awareness of strengths and weaknesses; develop greater empathy between spouses; encourage a positive, growth-oriented attitude toward the marital relationship; and promote better spousal communication. Tri-modal structuring, with its three modes of interaction, is described in chapter 3. Results of the study showed significant improvement on some marital satisfaction instruments, while showing no significant improvement on others.  Groups led by lay facilitators were just as likely to show increase in marital satisfaction as were groups led by the researcher and his wife. Recent literature raises questions about indissolubility and the nature of premarital counseling for second nuptials. Regarding indissolubility, the Catholic priest must be pastoral and ecclesial.  Regarding pastoral preparation for second nuptials, the priest integrates a number of roles. Unique concerns in second nuptials are grief, guilt, building a new family, personal limitations of bride and groom, and spirituality in remarriage.
