The central hypothesis of the project is that pastoral openness to anger and disillusionment are crucial to the reestablishment of contact.  The project employs three home visits and nine group sessions to investigate the depth of marital conversation, marital dynamics, developmental histories, ethical issues of family life and faith issues arising from pastoral involvement. The research notes increased capacity to communicate and to reflect on ethical issues. The goal was both to nurture the couples' maturity in faith and to enrich their marriage relationship.  Eight couples met weekly for three months. They reflected on Scripture, tradition, experience and reason as four sources of authority for Christian faith, and on the image of covenant as the central symbol of Christian marriage. It uses family systems and object relations theory to support the research.  The project does not provide a comprehensive premarital counseling program but does present a model developed within an Episcopalian context.  The practical research is done by questionnaire-based interviews with twelve couples who experience the genogram as the primary framework for their four to six session premarital programs. The project examined theological presuppositions, descriptions of each enrichment program, evaluations of the results of each program, and many of the sources for marriage enrichment.  The theological presuppositions came out of the examination of selected scriptures, and how Baptists have hisorically interpreted those in their statements of faith.  The evaluation compared the scores of a pre-session and post-session 'marital communication inventory'.  These scores indicated areas of improvement in communication.
