The author researched Puritan preaching in general and Puritan Increase Mather's preaching in particular to apply some helpful insight for modern pastors in addressing how 'special providences' such as tornados, fires, and earthquakes should be biblically interpreted. By looking at their personal lifestyles, their study habits, their devotional lives, and their sermon styles, a series of practical, timeless principles is developed that can be applied to the ministry of the twentieth-century pastor.
