specially designed spiritual assessment process, this dissertation describes a project that demonstrates that attention to the spiritual dimension of humanity is an essential factor in providing high-quality, effective health care. Spiritual assessment occurred while providing pastoral care through emotional support and active listening. Considered along with the medical and psychological assessments, a holistic understanding and treatment of the patient was achieved. A greater sense of healing, harmony of body, mind and spirit was achieved. Nursing plays a critically important role in the delivery of patient spiritual care.  Drawing on both the history and literature of nursing and the descriptive statistical study of clinical nurses and nursing students, the project makes recommendations for clinical and education nursing sectors.  The descriptive study was designed to provide insight to demographic, educational, religious, and spiritual practices as related to the following dimensions of spiritual care: awareness, attitude, practice, and resource support.  Respondents indicated that spiritual care is important and that the practice of spiritual care tended to be more frequent among the theologically conservative, those who engage in personal spiritual practices and the older, more experienced nurse. The project reports on a pilot study in which seven congregations participated in an organ donation educational program.  The author developed the program and trained the pastors to teach the program in the seven congregations.  One hundred thirty participant questionnaires were returned.  Sixty-five percent of the respondents reported that they had talked with their families about organ donation. Research included an examination of the wholistic concept, its biblical and theological bases, and its historical development.  Models of wholism are included in the project along with learning experiences of the participating pastors and physician. This study is theologically informed by the concept of faith as grace with courage, the power enabling individuals to encounter and calm the anxiety of finitude.  The research designed is quasi-experimental using a pretest, posttest and comparison group.  It is an outcome study. Total participants in the study numbered 68.  Statistical analysis consisted of an analysis of variance and linear step regression of gain scores.  The research hypothesis was affirmed at the .05 level of significance.
