The study involved semi-structured interviews with fifteen male students of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College and a literature review of attempts to explain the relative lack of men in the church and of material with particular relevance to the Caribbean. The research questions were designed to elicit views on manhood, Christianity, and the impact of becoming a Christian on a male. A composite description of a real man, according to the respondents, is one who is strong, assertive, caring, calmly confident, hospitable, wise, loyal, self-reliant, not given to displays of emotion indicating distress, and able to attract women. Positive views of Christianity were that it is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; that it give a sense of belonging; that it upholds sound moral values; and that it has a worldwide appeal. Pastors were viewed positively as hospitable, moral, and skilled in communicating the Christian message. Christianity was viewed negatively as too restrictive, having unattainable standards, hypocritical, bigoted, and prone to divisiveness. A minority saw pastors as con men and leaders who do not set a good example. Most respondents saw major changes taking place in their lives taking place if they became Christians, with a larger number focusing on new obligations/restrictions and a smaller number on new benefits. Respondents were more or less evenly divided between encouragement and caution in their reaction to a best friend's decision to become a Christian. Finally, they claimed that young men were reluctant to become Christians because they saw negative consequences such as being linked to the female world; loss of freedom to do what they really like to do, e.g., engage in premarital sex; and loss of friends, especially through refusal to participate in gang activities. The study concluded that the most significant factors contributing to the difficulty young males have in becoming Christians seem to be those involving a clash between Christianity and culturally constructed views of manhood. Engaging in premarital sex and participating in gang activities are both marks of manhood in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and both are incompatible with Christianity. In comparison with a young female who is also considering becoming a Christian, a young male has one additional hurdle to clear: the apparent loss of, or inability to establish, his manhood. This may help explain why fewer young males than young females tend to identify with Christianity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131212668993536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:43:54.835Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:32:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:05:22Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"679734a3-fbc1-424c-bd3c-844b74b48f91","accessControl_ssim":["624f23d7-de8c-4d84-8494-4f443c538d15"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["What attracts men to church programs"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:32:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:09:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e8b03b75-d387-439b-a9f0-32c801fb3cf3"],"hasLease_ssim":["75f88ed4-f517-4df0-9972-25f8067d8dd3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Martin R Crain"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Thomas Frances Hart"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with men","Men--Religious life","Evangelistic work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project examines why men are the least reached group in most North American churches and suggests steps for churches to make themselves more accessible to men and ways to get greater access to men. More and more individuals are giving importance to their personal spiritual experience. Simultaneously, such people are recognizing the value of usable patterns of spiritual formation from the history of Christian spirituality. These time-tested models are providing help in discovering the divine presence and identifying the quiet whispers of God in one's personal life as well as within the communities to which one belongs. Accepting a renewed quest of spirituality as part of our contemporary American society, this dissertation/project attempted to assist six men, from three distinct generations, in their everyday awareness of God. The pattern from the history of Christian spiritual formation under scrutiny was the 'Spiritual Exercises' written in the 16th century by Ignatius Loyola. From for 12 weeks, September 1 through November 30, six Presbyterian men from the same parish entered into the Exercises. The primary resource was 'Choosing Christ in the World: Directing the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola According to Annotation Eighteen and Nineteen' by Joseph Tetlow, S.J. During the 90 days each participant followed a daily sequence of prayer and reflection adapted from the Spiritual Exercises. Individually, the retreatants met twice a month with the retreat director/dissertation author and once a month gathered together as a group. Written journal entries composed during the experience, one-on-one meetings with the retreat director/author and self-evaluations completed by the participants at the beginning and conclusion of the project provide the basis to identify affect (emotions) and effect (behaviors) influenced by the experience with the Exercises. The author also utilized the work of William Straus and Neil Howe, 'Generations: The History of America's Future, 1584 to 2069' to provide generational context and identify influences."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715388515155968,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:45:42.868Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:16:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:50:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"145fe3a0-4c2a-4621-aafb-952bb24cd563","accessControl_ssim":["32d12909-4528-45fe-9d95-24b567008977"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping fathers to fulfill their role as spiritual leaders in the home to enhance the health of First Baptist Church of North Mobile, Saraland, Alabama"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:16:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:43:20Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cb2f43f5-8af5-4406-8cfe-58d6ddea8cb7"],"hasLease_ssim":["e084165d-d62f-4faa-bfcc-3703f47e7f13"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Harry E Litton"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Thom S Rainer"],"publisher_tesim":["Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Men--Religious life","First Baptist North Mobile (Saraland, Ala)","Fathers--Religious aspects--Christianity","Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation examines the effect of fatherlessness in both the church and the culture. While doing so, they impacted the world and laid the foundation for carrying out the Great Commission (see Matt. 28:19-20). The four key areas are: prayer, empowerment, encouragement, and evangelism. The project leader will conduct five two-hour sessions with his core group of twenty men divided into five accountability groups of four. The first ten minutes will be devoted to prayer requests and small group prayer followed by forty-five minutes of teaching and dialogue (see appendices). A ten-minute break for refreshments will follow the first hour, and the second hour will conclude with ten minutes of reflection and interaction to the material discussed. This project is to be utilized as an introductory curriculum which the project leader hopes will lay the foundation for building a strong, cohesive group which will be accountable to God and to one another."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132341640364032,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:01:51.507Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T05:43:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:02:16Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"aed2760f-652a-4093-b50a-97b2b6f952ac","accessControl_ssim":["89c40389-fdb5-4a4d-93e2-2803cbd32de3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The search for shalom: spiritual wholeness for contemporary men"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T05:43:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:10:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c8a7ca52-9ee2-4af7-9021-ad6d7f3dc837"],"hasLease_ssim":["3ff6a9e3-774f-4d0e-bea5-70ef5dc1dbfd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Edward F Campbell"],"year_tesim":["1997"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Stanley L Smith"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Men--Religious life","Spiritual formation","Church work with men"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes that churches can help men define new identities and norms, without further dividing them from other men and women in the faith community, by facilitating a heroic journey of faith development informed by insights from feminist theology and the secular men's movement. Promise Keepers aids local churches in many ways, by building up Christian men in regional conferences conducted in football stadiums, by providing support for pastors and ministry leaders through its Ambassador and Key Man networks, and by encouraging pastors and churches to serve their communities. A discipleship survey based on the 'seven promises' and distributed to 500 men shows that Promise Keepers does make a difference in the lives of some Christian men, equipping and motivating them to pursue vital relationships with one another, to love their wives, and to support the mission of local churches in tangible ways."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131039792365568,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:41:09.968Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T05:03:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:43:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"14798cc4-99ee-4c4f-b582-2040618acdb8","accessControl_ssim":["cb07e702-7433-4667-b565-4f4d6a8309d0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A project approach to increase the awareness and the understanding of the men of First Baptist Church, Lathrop. . ."],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T05:03:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:43:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ea5c4a45-640b-493f-a21d-36c1a9d3041a"],"hasLease_ssim":["89196645-f410-4910-be95-de81f3232f19"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Dan Rainbolt"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David A Cash"],"publisher_tesim":["Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Men--Religious life","Men","Church work with men","Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Men in today's society lack positive male role models. In a church that had no active men's group and lacked involvement of men in important leadership responsibilities, this project seeks to demonstrate that men, if shown a biblical rationale, can be taught and led to change thinking and behavior. The project conducted a nine-hour teaching experiment during a weekend, using a control group of 25 men and women and an experimental group of 12 men. The retreat teaching exercise produced significant changes in both thinking and behavior of the 12 men of the experimental group. Pre-test/post-test documents, when analyzed, offer evidence of these gains in understanding. As a direct result of the experiment, a men's group was formed. The project discusses sex-role differences, father-son relationships, male woundedness, and the role of men in today's
