The author, from research and personal experience, offers pastoral care guidelines in understanding the illness, in identification of the mentally ill, and in ministering to the mentally ill persons and their families. The project involved a six-session, twelve-hour educational seminar.  The seminar investigated a clinical definition of religion, the relationship between religion and culture, and religion's relationship with Axis I and Axis II DSM-IIIR diagnoses. It concluded by addressing psychiatric assessment skills in the area of religion.
