This thesis examines the biblical validity of mentoring and andragogy, and assesses the effect of a self-study, andragogical mentoring course, written by the researcher, on the mentoring commitment and competency of Australian Baptist church leaders. Forty leaders, including seventeen pastors, completed the course and were tested both before and after the course for their mentoring ability (commitment, knowledge and skills). This thesis-project proposes that novice pastors can become better communicators through mentoring relationships with seasoned preachers. When these relationships are not possible in a pastor's ministry setting, then distance sermon coaching--using telephone, e-mail, cassette tapes--can help pastors continue to improve homiletical skills. The project provides the theological and theoretical background for such an approach.
