The project director implemented the project from 10 September 2013 through 13 January 2014, utilizing four key components: specialized research in the field of mentoring, a study of the characteristics and needs of the ministers serving in the Bethel Association, actual development of the strategy utilizing a team approach, and presentation of the finished strategy to the ministers of the association for adoption. These relationships incorporate mentors who are both military professionals and mentors who are religious leaders of integrity. Using a mixed methods approach to descriptive research, the author researched biblical and historical methods of discipleship, ministerial formation, modern research in mentoring, and surveyed chaplains about personal experiences with mentors during their early military careers. The components of the 'Adaptive Courage' model include irrational thoughts, emotional sabotage, relational seclusion, volitional inaction, and spiritual inattentiveness with their counterparts ensnared opportunity, humble confidence, selective vulnerability, incremental tenacity, and simple transcendence. Ten diverse leaders participated in individual intake and teaching sessions and follow-up debriefing and assessment sessions. The researcher used case study and grounded theory to generate data.  The results suggested a model that should contain five elements.  Pastors must train current leaders in transformational self-leadership.  Second, trained leaders must invite young mentees into a mentoring relationship. Third, all parties must agree on the goals.  Fourth, there must be regular meetings between the mentor and the mentee. One hypothesis of this research was that there was a relationship between the level of risk and the level of trust which are contributing factors empowering Airmen. The second hypothesis was that there was a relationship between the level of respect and the level of leadership which are contributing factors empowering Airmen.
