In the context of an eight-week, learning-focused, mentoring relationship, participants developed leadership and communication skills, and set goals for spiritual and ministerial growth. All participants showed growth in all specified areas in their final assessment of the mentoring program. The project director identified five leadership skills, five communication skills and five spiritual formation qualities necessary for ministry excellence. Laws seperating church and state will not allow mentors to evangelize on school grounds. The school selected 10 boys that would benefit from a mentoring relationship and the church provided the mentors. One on one meetings, group sessions and field trips were used to teach character and leadership traits. The coaching helped participants do evangelism consistent with their approach to working with others as indicated by the DISC Classic Personal Profile System 2800. Quantitative and qualitative measures were used. Coaching sessions focused on current personal evangelism efforts of the participants. The aim was involving participants from the Oak Grove Baptist Student Ministry, Bel Air, Maryland to practice mentoring as a discipleship tool.  Many church discipleship practices focused on information assimilation rather than life transformation.  The lack of application exemplified a drastric struggle in the church's educational practices.  Mentorships offered a viable key to effect change in the students' Christian spiritual growth through accountability and personal relationships. The literary review surveys some of the key literature concerning church planting, some of the most critical literature concerning coaching, and the literature specifically geared towards the coaching of church planters. The research procedure defines the case study interview questions and church planter surveys used to prove the hypothesis. The specific facet of mentoring considered is discipleship in leadership development and deployment. A 13-week mentoring program on leadership development and deployment was developed which focused on character, content, and competency. Lay-leaders where mentored through the project both individually and in small groups. Those team-members being led assessed the lay-leaders before and after the mentoring program. The lay-leaders' significantly improved in the areas of 'follower-ship' skills, knowledge and understanding in the discipline of leadership, and leadership skills.
