The project conducted three seminars for church leaders concerning child abuse and its effects, self-esteem among black males, and substance abuse. These mentors were paired with seven first offenders referred by the juvenile court. The project includes a literature search on the subject of 'mentoring', a survey of pastoral internship opportunities offered by a representative group of evangelical seminaries and graduate schools of theology, a comparative analysis of three local church internship programs similar to the effort at Blue Church, and detailed appraisals of the six internships already served at Blue Church, carried out by means of personal interviews with each former intern. The thesis was that with couples enlisted and mentors trained, the young marriages would give evidence of being strengthened through the guidance of the middle-aged couples.  Pretests were the Dyadic Adjustment Scales (DAS) and the Marital Satisfaction Scale (MSS).  Weekly enrichment sessions included mentoring time after the director's lectures on eight aspects of marriage. Black males are fraught with negative societal perceptions in Alexandria and need support in positive self-esteem, moral, and spiritual persuasion.  They are victimized by poor education, poor economics, and a shrinking labor market.  Many young Black males are involved in a life of crime as the result of hopelessness. Many of these students become actively involved in the life of the church throughout the period of their study.  However, many others do not.  This project presents a strategy for integrating students into the life of a church.  Mentoring provides an ideal model for involving an entire congregation in ministry to and with students.  Based on a theological framework and using lessons learned from history, demography and ethnography, a three-pronged model of mentoring (visitation/evangelism, mentoring and hospitality) is developed.  The model was tested successfully in Knox Presbyterian Church, Toronto, found next to the University of Toronto.  The study is in three parts.  The first is a theoretical and analytical basis for a programme of mentoring. The second provides a practical manual for establishing a mentoring community in a local church. The hypothesis was tested in India by developing and implementing a discipleship training program with mentoring. The project involved training two groups of students called mentoring and non-mentoring.  After fifteen weeks of discipleship training, test scores indicated that the mentored group had an edge over the non-mentored. They were paired with ten mentorees for six months.  The pairs met weekly, guided by a mentoring manual.  The project director met monthly with the mentors.  Each mentoree's growth in planning, relationships, and leadership skills was measured with pre- and post-questionnaires.  The mentorees evaluated the mentors.  Covenants and journals were developed by participants.  Conclusions reached were: a support system for Hawaii ministers is needed; ministers grow in a mentoring relationship; and, mentoring is a valid support system.
