The Specific Interpersonal Trust Scale (SITS) measured the levels of trust both before and after the mentoring program.  The SITS scores failed to support the hypothesis; the scale was also faulty as a measurement tool. The program was sponsored by the Northern Wisconsin District of the former American Lutheran Church.  The thesis was a response to two questions: who ministers to our clergy? where does the caregiver go to receive care?  The Mentor Project had four design facets: a mentor who was available to clergy; spiritual retreats; colleague groups; and fellowship groups.  The key to this project was the provision of mentors.  The pilot Mentor Project was a proven program which met the self-care needs of clergy participants. A small group of laity was recruited from the New Creation Christian Fellowship of San Antonio, Texas.  While the main purpose of the group was to examine rites of passage as developed through Scriptures, African traditions and the Boy Scouts, particular attention was given to ensure that the group experienced the mentoring process.  This practicum/project laid the foundation necessary to establish a group of mentors committed to teach, transmit, and train young people to become all they are capable of being. Chapter two of the research project explored and established a biblical and theological basis for personal evangelism. Chapter three presents an investigation of the mentoring process and its uses in three extra-biblical settings (e.g. the relationship of Socrates and Plato).  Research into mentoring relationships in the medical nursing and education professions provided examples for using mentoring relationships in a church's evangelism ministries.  Chapter four described the twelve week process of equipping a selected group of members of First Baptist Church to initiate a mentoring relationship with specific emphasis on personal evangelism. This thesis examines the biblical validity of mentoring and andragogy, and assesses the effect of a self-study, andragogical mentoring course, written by the researcher, on the mentoring commitment and competency of Australian Baptist church leaders. Forty leaders, including seventeen pastors, completed the course and were tested both before and after the course for their mentoring ability (commitment, knowledge and skills). This thesis-project proposes that novice pastors can become better communicators through mentoring relationships with seasoned preachers. When these relationships are not possible in a pastor's ministry setting, then distance sermon coaching--using telephone, e-mail, cassette tapes--can help pastors continue to improve homiletical skills. The project provides the theological and theoretical background for such an approach. The project director based the process on Hugh Townsend’s Set the Journey: a Strategy Development Model for Associations. The director enlisted a team composed of Baptist leaders – Both bivocational and fully-funded – from across the state. The primary goals of the process were to: (1) create a “Bivocational Pastors Profile,” (2) determine “best practices” within other state Baptist Conventions, (3) develop a finalized strategy, and (4) present the strategy to appropriate leadership for both approval and affirmation in order to proceed with implementation, albeit outside the scope of the actual project. The project relied on survey data and a professional strengths inventory together with focus groups composed of pastors and spouses at six regional Dialogue Dinners.
