Using analogies drawn from the Genesis narrative about Jacob's life, the theoretical approach for this study evolved from cultural anthropology, filtered through family systems and object-relations principles. The purpose is to reveal underlying structural changes that are fueling the UM debate. The scope is confined to interview material gathered from six United Methodist clergypersons. As in the title, the more specific thrust is to correlate changes in the perceived balance between respected ecclesiastical authority and the power of God needed to sustain denominational health."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Phillips Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f3d74d9-8a9b-4580-a458-c2d78a76b977"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799714858076209152,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:37:17.001Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:49:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:27:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1ab596c6-b13c-4eb6-95b3-9439adb1b256","accessControl_ssim":["8c2ef861-246d-4f6c-9aaf-c754526e5883"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Strengthening the vitality of New Hope Free Methodist Church through the Natural Church Development Approach"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:49:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:54:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b6b45313-ee29-46c2-bfd6-ee3d563fadfd"],"hasLease_ssim":["188c6717-4e9b-4344-ac44-35e37096e929"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Howard A Snyder"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Linda J Adams"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Methodist Church","Church attendance"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project used the Natural Church Development (NCD) paradigm and assessment tool to assess and improve the church's health. Today, over three decades later, she continues to follow the British-Western cultural patterns in theology and worship. African theological beliefs and cultural practices are still foreign to her church. As a result, members practice their traditional beliefs outside of the church and Western cultural norms in the church. This is a problem the church has not been able to address. This paper will attempt to highlight some of the African practices, examine their theological relevance, and evaluate them. I will examine why the church is still pro-Western after nearly 40 years of autonomy, and make recommendations as to why she should focus on her traditional concepts in the new millennium to influence her changing them, and or incorporating them in her worship, practices, and beliefs."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716979414663168,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:11:00.068Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
