The early Methodists experienced renewal and revival as they explored alternative and innovative missional models. The author's project explores and focuses on this question through a re-envisioning of ministry structures within a local United Methodist congregation through contextual assessment, community collaboration and Biblical engagement. Through theological engagement with the subject of Biblical abundance, this project paper will articulate how a church can move from the power of a belief in scarcity to a practical holiness rooted in professing God's good news. Through small group conversations, experiential worship services, Bible studies, a sermon series, and intentional formation efforts, First United Methodist Church has grown in its orientation towards Biblical abundance, renewed religious identity and revitalization. The paper serves as a reflection on this transformation process with hopes to empower other local churches as they seek to discern and initiate revitalization in their congregations.' -- Leaf [2]."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126959056486400,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:36:18.274Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:22:56Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:58:46Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"21cfc63b-f0f1-4d2a-bddf-0a3cc76fc46f","accessControl_ssim":["1f447785-ae3b-479b-bc97-d7ca6a5a13de"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Cut the blue wire : defusing tension in a United Methodist local congregation amidst denominational turmoil"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:22:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:08:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9ff9a2c0-fd68-45b0-bdad-df30166683b9"],"hasLease_ssim":["f44564f8-31c5-4af5-98e8-77e2ea36ab46"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lovett Weems"],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. However, as a result of mobilizing the congregation through sermons, seminars and teachings carried out during Bible studies and Sunday school sections, coupled with its aggressive small group outreach initiatives, the congregation has developed a new module for membership recruitment, using small groups and this is significantly impacting not only its membership growth; it is also beginning to be a major factor for spiritual growth and revivalism as it prepares members of the church to become faithful disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.' -- Leaf [2]."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715140452483072,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:41:46.297Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:20:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:18:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9bdc71cd-787e-4d8f-b70f-1ed4f9e8e0ca","accessControl_ssim":["b90515ae-dad5-459d-b077-f1f65a5cbf35"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["There is life after death : using Christ's call to sacrificial living as a foundation for church turn-arounds in urban settings"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:20:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:41:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9570e7cd-58a2-4276-8c7e-476db782b455"],"hasLease_ssim":["0345dd9c-6a1f-4d34-8bfc-94c57c5dbc97"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["C. A sizable percentage of the United Methodist Churches (UMC) within the Greater New Jersey Conference (GNJC) are steep in decline; and St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Montclair, New Jersey faced a similar struggle. The approach to this project was to use Christ 's example of sacrificial love as a model of how a congregation can organize her people, procedures, and programs to fully live out her mission in a rapidly changing culture. An ongoing assessment tool was created to assist St. Mark's United Methodist Church and others to determine what aspects of the church's ministry should be ended and allowed to expire. This assessment tool was administered during a one-day seminar with three different congregations. The researcher of this project held phone interviews with each pastor after a three-month period to gauge the effects of their commitment to letting go of certain aspects of their ministry.' -- Leaf [2]."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721241796411392,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:18:44.992Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:19:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:33:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2013abb9-8fa4-4c93-a3fe-4e593efe963f","accessControl_ssim":["197e3aba-bce3-4cec-bdb6-653bb43ddfa5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Cross-racial and cross-cultural ministry in the Latino context : learning to listen to our stories : intercultural competency 101 for Latino communities"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:19:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:05:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e862ee95-cac4-4081-b981-b7413eaa01e5"],"hasLease_ssim":["2012dc61-e497-4ad4-90fc-baa05e015289"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Douglas Powe"],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. I contend that pastors and the church are best served if the incoming first-year pastor has received some measure of significant transitional guidance and training prior to their appointment. Some denominations prepare their pastors accordingly and implement requirements that allow them to acquire guidance and training that will help them in their transition. My project is seen from the lens of the United Methodist Church which provides a short transitional period for pastors and churches to come together to confirm if the “new marriage” is a fit for both pastor and church. The purpose of this project is to capture first-year experiences and stories of pastors in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME) to identify common ideologies that there is a need for significant guidance and substantial training prior to their appointment. Perhaps some other ideas and suggestions may arise from this study. My methodology entails qualitative research in the form of a survey that was used to gather data on the views of new pastors in the CME Church. United Methodist provides resources of information to their pastors to help facilitate their transition process before they take ownership of a new appointment. My mission is to build upon their transition process which includes appointing a transition team to the pastor. This project revealed there is a need for more substantial training and guidance for first-year pastors in the CME Church. Although 93% felt they transitioned into the role well, their responses reveal they lack certain skills or expertise in certain areas that may have helped with the transition."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://hdl.handle.net/10898/12416"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716499246546944,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:03:22.144Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
