The more prophetic voice is noted from 1969-1985. This paper documents how Covenant United Methodist Church engaged in such a study.  The plan chosen for Covenant to study congregational life included the use of such categories as identity, context, process, and program.  Data was obtained from adult and youth class discussions and from information gathered by distributing the 'parish profile inventory' to one-half of Covenant's membership.  A summary of all the data collected provides a portrait of Covenant UMC.  By examining and analyzing this portrait, one may better understand who Covenant is and what Covenant may desire to become. Two churches, while maintaining their independence, have been drawn together in mission to the community through joint programs of nurture and outreach, and administratively through the organization of a parish council. Historically, the contributions of women have not been fully recognized, nor women fully empowered to serve in decision making arenas.  The church suffers when the full potential and contributions of half its members are denied and underutilized.  This project will enable the church to recognize and affirm the contributions, perspectives, and experiences of women in order to make the church more whole and the gospel more alive. Difficulties in bridging intracultural and intergenerational gaps show the problems in attempting to establish a corporate identity and to define 'Black experience' for that corporate body. It also reports the results of such a pilot program in a United Methodist church in Texas in 1987.  Gifts are identified as abilities, ordinary and extraordinary, which can contribute to the purpose of the church as it serves the reign of God.  Many varied resources for gifts clarification are identified and analyzed.  Ministries are defined as services which are rendered by all members of the church, lay and clergy, within and outside the church's gathered life.  The study outlines the efforts of a gifts discovery project in a local congregation.  The work of the planning team, an evaluation of their work, and an evaluation of the project are included.  The essential elements of a ministry of gifts discovery are identified.
