The author interviewed Marines and chaplains who had served in combat to describe the vocational particulars of the chaplains' ministry, and identified spiritual practices that sustained chaplains spiritually in their ministry. The author develops a four-part paradigm of spiritual leadership; (1) knowledge of vocation, (2) assent, (3) trust expressed in prayer, and (4) community; as a guide in spiritually preparing chaplains. A questionnaire was disseminated and the results indicate that spiritual vitality is considered essential to doing the job of a Christian Navy Medicine chaplain.  The overwhelming majority of participants also indicated that practicing time management and self-care are extremely important. IPR is effective for interpersonal skills training among clergy and seminary students. Can it be used to improve communication skills (articulating, listening, self-disclosure, openness, and conflict resolution) of parishioners in a United States Air Force (USAF) chapel? The training used an action and reflection model. The chaplains actively engaged in ministry while reflecting upon the theological basis for that ministry. The Confessions of Saint Augustine of Hippo was the primary resource for spiritual self-examination. Chaplains need to be spiritually ready for ministry in war. This training occurred during 2003-2004 at Chapel Five, Fort Dix, New Jersey.
