The Army leadership perceived suicide prevention training as a means of dealing with the problem.  The Army Chaplaincy is selected as the proponent of suicide prevention training.  Since human life is a precious gift of God and suicide is an irrational act, suicide prevention is a life-saving ministry. These chaplains are sustained and enabled by a strong sense of God's providence and by a clear vision of 'calling' understood through a rather literal application of the Ordinal of the Episcopal Church. The project discusses worship among nineteenth-century Episcopalians and the church's place in the antebellum South. The project reviewed current literature and interviewed a corporate personnel director and chaplain assignment officers from the US Air Force and US Navy.  The Army Chaplain School administered a questionnaire to Basic and Advanced students, and chaplain colonels completed a similar questionnaire at a senior chaplains' conference. Denominational polity is a critical factor, especially in the initial phases of a chaplain's career.  The army's accession and assignment processes are 'closed,' as in an episcopal polity, but most chaplains come from denominations that are not 'closed.' Chaplains from 'open' clergy placement systems have less positive attitudes toward the army system. A survey United States Army chaplains currently stationed in the Republic of South Korea indicates that a majority of these chaplains are survivors of profound loss during childhood. Of these chaplains, 36.3 percent reported an alcoholic parent and 68.7 percent reported an experience of loss due to alcohol that had positvie impact on their professional identity. Biblical theology and social-science data form the context in which loss can be integrated. While not all Reserve/Guard chaplains pastor congregations, those who do are subject to special tensions.  The reserve chaplain faces both philosophical and functional role expectations that come from a variety of sources: the military, the civilian congregation served by the chaplain, the chaplain's endorsing agency, and the ever-present realization that if mobilized he or she would have to leave his/her civilian congregation to be with and minister to Reserve soldiers.  A research questionnaire was developed by the author to identify tensions resulting from the dual role ministry.
