The author implemented ways to raise awareness of the services through the hospital. He also conducted a survey among the current chapel congregation. Next, he did a series of interviews of chapel congregants using narrative analysis to gain a picture of the meaning and purpose of the service for the current attendees to provide insights for enhancing the service. The method used in this study was grounded theory. The results show that chaplains go through a transformation and become new people. The changes that occur are categorized by five marks. These marks include: increased humility, improved pastoral identity, recognizing their finiteness, valuing their contributions, and finding strengths in weakness. Wright from military chaplain to pastoral leader in civilian service.  It examined the correlation between the pastoral leadership demonstrated by Chaplain Wright and established leadership expressions and patterns.  This examination involved the review of many personal documents, review of his military record and interviews conducted with individuals from congregations he served as a civilian pastor. The Army Chaplain Corps is only at 33-percent personnel strength in terms of Catholic chaplains. Retaining Army Catholic chaplains has become increasingly important in light of Department of Defense budget cuts; moreover, retention is more cost-effective for the Army than recruitment. Using a mixed methods approach to descriptive research, the author researched biblical and historical methods of discipleship, ministerial formation, modern research in mentoring, and surveyed chaplains about personal experiences with mentors during their early military careers.
