A committee of four or five people who are concerned about the mission of the church and who have a deep commitment and an enthusiastic spirit would make the survey, evaluate and act upon the results, and monitor future membership dynamics. In acting upon the results, the committee would evaluate the existing programs in light of their effectiveness and meaning for the membership. If the leadership of a local church follows the suggestions in this report, several important changes may be expected to be the result. First, the research (the actual inquiry, data collection, and analysis) will help a church to discover the reasons why people are joining and/or leaving the church; to identify attracting and repelling factors and activities of the church, areas of specific needs of the people the church is trying to reach and strategies of the church in responding to those needs, the population objective of the church’s outreach, and factors influential in attracting and retaining future members; and to provide some candid data for making policy decisions. Second, policy decisions informed by the research will help to change congregational activities, emphasis, programs, pastoral priorities and activities, the direction and objective of the church’s outreach, and will help to promote attitudinal changes. And, finally, the problem is that some churches will continue to decline no matter what is done. In those cases, almost all that can be promised is that leadership will understand the root causes of the decline."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860257300545536,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:04.961Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"93ca7636-bbbc-44a1-aeee-4f5d625121bd","accessControl_ssim":["b68e82ba-1405-4f5c-8fb5-08418f787698"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["A ministry to inactive members at the point of conflict or resistance: A dissertation submitted to the faculty in candidacy for the degree of Doctor of ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d26a128e-1ac1-4fa7-b9fd-8fa2d7184621"],"hasLease_ssim":["8d246c71-11f3-488d-b5e4-4c4e512608ce"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1979"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Beginning in January of 1976 and continuing through December of 1978, this experimental ministry took place with the inactive members of the congregation of Christ Church, United Church of Christ, Annville, Pennsylvania. During this three-year period the pastoral ministry in the parish was carried out in the normal manner. This project became an integral part of the parish work and was seldom mentioned, in order to avoid affecting the results. The members of the parish were aware that I was involved in a doctoral project, but very few had any knowledge of the area being studied. Further, the project did not alter the remainder of the parish program in any significant manner, with the exception of the fact that a number of the inactive members responded in some measurable way. The project is, therefore, a plan which can be readily adapted and utilized by any parish in which inactive members are a concern. My intention in this project was to explore the problem of that conflict in the parish which is related to inactive members by demonstrating that a ministry at the point of conflict or resistance would be helpful to the inactive persons involved and the parish itself, with the result that the learnings from this ministry would provide practical guidelines for pastors and churches to minister with inactive members."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860248248188928,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:56.328Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c168f704-4020-4359-b884-5ebd887adbf8","accessControl_ssim":["20990cc2-1909-4121-b248-29b14b42826e"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The development and formative evaluation of a consultative process to describe the expressed needs of single adults and appropriate models of ministries within local Baptist churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3c36c41f-21af-4fb1-bb65-2799863ca8dc"],"hasLease_ssim":["a5e9e6f7-6b4f-4fb0-bd99-8edc55c49efd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1979"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The Southern Baptist Convention is currently in the midst of Bold Mission Thrust. One objective of this emphasis is to “evangelize and congregationalize.”...In October of 1978, the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention also began a program emphasis targeted towards single adults. A case study covering a period of eight months provides the data for the exploration. The time span was January through August 1978. Within that time the patient, who is also a parishioner of mine, refused to undergo cardiac catheterization on one occasion and three times refused to undergo open-heart surgery which involved a mitral valve implant and three bypass grafts. As we shall see, the patient exhibited a high degree of anxiety and employed various tactics in his efforts to cope with his anxiety. We shall also be privy to the pressures to which he was subjected and the pressures which he exerted upon his family, the medical staff, and his friends, including me. A somewhat unique dimension of the project is based in part on the fact that, at the patient’s request and with the permission of the chief surgeon, I was present during the surgical procedure. If pastoral care is to have any significance for the parishioner, then surely the pastor must use every authentic means available to support and sustain the parishioner."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860240995188736,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:49.411Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b29f7bb7-d1e2-4bf1-9959-25ac0f7bce97","accessControl_ssim":["6d14f5f4-77bb-4eb6-ad6f-8a598ff85b1b"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The life of Jesus: a program of Christian education for the retarded adult.
