This was accomplished by: (1) reflection upon the mission of the church in light of changing environmental needs; (2) holding a Mission Sunday to involve the community in formulating a current statement of mission and sense of corporate identity; (3) conducting a planning retreat to set priorities, objectives, and strategies; and (4) evaluation of processes and results. Discussions of hopes, fears, problems and reservations were analyzed and compared with Vatican II and post-conciliar theologies of the diaconate, presbyterate and church order.  The resulting theology involves the complementarity of roles of laity, diaconate, presbyterate and episcopacy in pursuing the mission of the church. Priests will only accept the diaconate when they understand why it was restored. Understanding--and definition--can be achieved through massive catechesis. The congregation will divide its attention into five areas.  First, through mission clarification, they will identify the purposes of their church--what God is calling them to be and do.  Second, through congregational assessment, they will study a 'snapshot' picture of where they now are.  Thirdly, through the process of goal setting, they will decide where they want to be and form goals which reflect their purposes. The purpose further is to explore the creative and dynamic tension between these three in global ministry, urban ministry, the life of the judicatory, and the life of the congregation.  One result of the study is the realization that mission itself is an agent of renewal for the church.  When mission occurs, the church is converted as powerfully as the convert.  The conclusion identifies leadership not as authoritarian or as managerial, but as a new style of leadership for a new time.
