The third article framework was used to clarify a genuinely Lutheran understanding of mission amid postmodern times, wherein Gospel proclamation and vocation were identified as integral to that mission. The author studies this in the local congregation by examining the implementation of a third article shaped congregational strategic plan (mission, vision, and strategy) and its impact on the formal organization and leadership structure of a congregation. The emphasis herein depicts the urgent need for churches to re-evaluate their mission regarding their effectiveness and relevance to those residing in the community in which the church is located. Equally important is the actual occurrence of change when research demands change, regardless of how personally painful such change would be. Issues addressed in the project include: 1) whether members of the local congregation have a clear understanding of the relationship between the sacrament of Holy Communion and the mission of the church, 2) whether a more complete knowledge and understanding of Holy Communion has an impact upon their perception of the church's mission, and 3) whether the way in which Holy Communion is practiced influences the way in which they attempt to fulfill the mission of the church.
