An eight-member study team, along with the author, listened to recorded interviews of church members telling of their relationship with the church.  Listening for particular narrative and symbolic elements within these discourses, the study team identified three distinct congregations within the one church that is held together by a strong corporate affinity toward 'open' communion. An ad hoc committee of twelve persons worked in eight weekly sessions with two sources of information: demographic data and a congregational survey.  Nine long-range goals and eight pastoral leadership skills were developed and presented to the congregation at a church conference. A team of twelve volunteer leaders was chosen to study the demographics of the church and community, as well as ministry concepts that work.  They then developed a ministry strategy with a new vision/purpose statement and a target person personality profile.  They also created goals for improvement in six areas of concern.  These areas were building and grounds, organization and ministries, outreach and publicity, hospitality, visitation and follow-up, and integration of new members.  The result of this project was that the church went from being an inwardly focused church to a community-focused church. A descriptive inventory was administered in the spring of 1991 to all the senior pastors of the 181 churches in the Minnesota District of the Assemblies of God.  The resultant data were analyzed for frequency distribution for all variables, and correlations were computed for all independent variables with each dependent variable. Through development of a mission statement, recruiting lay involvement in mission, and increasing financial giving to the congregation, the thesis was validated by results. There were also intentional efforts to increase the outreach proportion of spending.  The project uses case study approaches, looking at the efforts carried out within the target congregation. Chapter 2 presents a biblical rationale for the research by using 1 Corinthians as an example of a church that had experienced transition.  Chapter 3 presents the behavioral and social science data that support the ministry project research on family systems.  Chapter 4 describes the implementation of the ministry project and the criteria that led the author to his conclusions.
