The author's congregation is the setting for a case study in which a Christian community's encounter with non-Christian religious perspectives prompts commonly recognized paradigms of response (exclusivism,inclusivism, and pluralism) to other religious faiths as ways of salvation. The study proposes that persons will evidence preference for the attitude of religious pluralism. Research in local church ministry relationships determines how poor relationships affect the mission and purpose of the church. Extensive materials on local church relationships and the theory of ministry relationships are available.  However, little practical material on improving relationships is available.  The research reveals that the hindrance of local church ministry by poor relationships between clergy and laity is a Protestant-wide problem.  Primary resources suggest a biblical and theoretical model for the improvement of ministry relationships.  The model proposes small groups which is the nominal group technique. For fifteen years, American Baptist Churches have used a printed form,  'Church Self-Study of Goals and Leadership Needs', to aid this reflection process.  The purpose of this project was to rewrite the form for the American Baptist Personnel Services.  Information was gained from persons directly acquainted with the document.  These resources included search committees, executive ministers, area ministers and pastors.  Data from each participating group was gathered and analyzed to form the background for the new document of church reflection.  The new form discusses the disciplined and guided thought which takes place when a church deliberately looks at itself -- its being, belief, function and mission. One specific way of congregational response is then selected. In a previous analysis of the congregation, we learned that our congregation was located in the area of Arlington which has the highest number of social problems.  We also learned that responding to human problems came out last on the scale of importance in our church life as it was perceived by our members. This project developed an eight week adult Sunday school class that explored the roles and expectations of clergy and lay people. The celebration was a goal-setting project in which the congregation developed a strategy for determining its future mission.  The thesis of this project is that the process of developing a mission strategy within the congregation results in a shift of focus by members away from a maintenance orientation and toward a mission orientation.  An instrument designed to measure any change of orientation was administered to the congregation. The challenge is even more difficult when the denomination is pluralistic. This project, conducted at St Mark United Methodist Church, Springfield, Ohio, developed a process to help the congregation determine its identity and purpose and to evaluate fairly its potential ministry.  It addressed the problem through a process of self-assessment.  The candidate provided leadership through collaboration and analysis. The research of the project uses methods from the Congregational Studies Institute (July 3-13, 1984, Union Seminary, New York) in the areas of identity, context, program and process.  It applies them to the author's ministerial setting.  The second purpose of this project is to develop an outline of a five-year plan for mission and ministry which the leadership of the author's congregation could use to understand the church's changing socio-cultural environment.  The research uncovers a mission orientation in the learned identity, context, program and process of the congregation. The methodology includes a study of the pertinent records of related judicatories and their agents, interviews of knowledgeable persons, a survey of presbyters using a standard instrument and a comparative statistical analysis of membership and financial data.
