The purpose of this project was to discover factors that contribute to the resiliency and retention of missionaries who have gone through traumatic events in their missionary career in Africa and yet continue to serve there.  This qualitative study used narrative methodology and involved 35 interviews with missionaries who had experienced various traumas.  Four factors that respondents brought into their trauma event were: a strong personal conviction, a preparedness from birth, words from God, and sturdy relationships.  Four factors which emerged from the trauma were experiencing the keeper side of God, hearing authoritative leadership voices, quickly finding new ministry foci, and benefiting from functional networks. He traced the historical development of member care in mission organizations, described its current context, and presented the need for spiritual direction.  The research included a history of Christian spiritual direction and presented the characteristics of some current models.  The author developed a theology and methodology of both spiritual direction and member care. Chapter 1 explains the causes of missionary attrition and proposes the resolutions through spiritual formation. Chapter 2 defines and describes the historical origin of spiritual formation beginning with the period of the Desert fathers and continuing through the modern day work of Richard J. Foster who have contributed to the understanding of the formation of spirituality and may continue to contribute in preventing missionary attrition. Chapter 3 examines missionaries' spiritual, psychological and physical statuses as well as different missionary generations that are distinct either in contribution to missions or to missionary attrition. Surveys have been conducted throughout seminaries and missions organizations in an effort to prevent and resolve issues of missionary attrition. Chapter 4 addresses issues of missionary attrition through spiritual formation in praxis during seminary and missions training tenure.
