For several years evangelism as verbal proclamation has dominated the mission effort of the KMC.  Such a focus results in numeric growth, but issues of spiritual maturity and responsible social witness have been neglected.  To be faithful to the biblical mandate, the KMC needs to find balance between verbal proclamation and social witness as taught in the Bible. Internship as developed in this project involves one year of learning language, culture, and religions integrated into responsible planting of a church. Mission subjects tuaught include anthropology, interpersonal relationships, world religions, cross-cultural communication, and church planting. Three out of four respondents from a broad spectrum of missionary roles and boards would train again at Houghton and credit the hard work, discipline, spiritual growth, examples of faculty and academic input (especially Bible courses) in college days with their development. The program's goal is to shepherd and equip newcomers in their cultural adjustment.  Surveys, orientation programs, and books provided the resources.  Five cross-cultural training principles provided the structure.  The exit phase stresses skills required for a cross-cultural ministry.  The entry phase equips the newcomers to adjust to their new environment and to achieve communicative competence. Methods and measurable results are included in the project. SIM International directed each area to revise its orientation program and state measurable objectives.
