Questionnaires were sent to all 43 congregations, and all were returned.  Data was also collected from the 1997 PCA Yearbook.  The churches were then ranked, and five each were selected from the top, middle, and bottom third, and their pastors interviewed concerning the missions giving of their congregations. Chapter one defines the structure of the project, the purpose and research methodology. Chapter two traces the beginning of evangelical mission in Nigeria from its beginning in 1850 up to 1997, and analyzes its methods, strategies and philosophies. Chapter three examines the socio-economic and political influences that affected Nigerian Christianity, dividing its history into four epochs.  Chapter four looks at the ecclesiastical influences of the Nigerian church and its missions.  Chapters five and six spell out the recommendations for improving the mission program. Utilizing questionnaires and interviews, the author measured the immersion's impact upon respondent's spiritual world view, orientation, and God image, finding considerable movement therein. Analyzing the outcomes using both psychological and missiological theory, the author concludes that the rising trend in short-term mission service represents a fecund moment in the spiritual development of those who serve. Many barriers, however, hinder both an effective communication and a proper understanding of the gospel.  The barriers exist both in the cultural back-ground of Western missionaries and the Africans' worldview.  While some missionaries have studied the African worldview, many have not spent enough time learning about their own cultural assumptions.  This project deals specifically with the issues related to the sharing of God's love in Africa.  It deals with the barriers missionaries bring with them as well as those that await on the field.  One basic premise is that the romanticized concept of love missionaries bring is totally different from the utilitarian view of love Africans hold.  Westerners value love for love's sake.  Africans understand and express appreciation in how something or someone has been useful to them. Misunderstanding on this point causes harm in communication and relationships. He is leading national pastors and foreign missionaries to team together to train the greatest resource of workers, church members, to start churches.  This paradigm has great potential in the Philippines.  The focus of this project, 'TEAMission,' is to design and to implement an indigenous training model that teaches, equips, and mobilizes members of a local church for the mission of planting churches in West Pangasinan, Philippines.  TEAMission forms an acrostic which has the meaning of teaching, equipping, and mobilizing church members for the mission of planting churches.  TEAMission will consist of three sessions led by the project leader and a team of pastors in the Western Pangasinan Association of Southern Baptist Churches (West-PASABAC).  Working interdependently, these leaders will plan, promote, and conduct a ten-week training model in a local church. This group, designated as trainers, will teach enlisted church members or trainees skills in five areas: evangelism, discipleship, Bible-teaching, leadership, and church planting.  The trainees will attend classes that will equip them with tools needed to start churches. They will be organized into church-planting teams and sent out to lead weekly Bible studies in strategic places for new churches on their own mission fields.  The training model will be evaluated by the project participants at the conclusion of the project.  This project will utilize questionnaires, videotaped interviews, lectures, class discussions, fieldwork reports, and written evaluation. The Mission Society informs the congregation of mission work and mission opportunities in the United States and abroad. The task of the Mission Society is to educate and challenge individuals to serve in missions wherever possible. A brief study of the congregation's constitution indicates that missions must be clearly defined as the prime purpose for the congregation's being. Further information reveals a variety of Mission Societies to accomplish that purpose. Many serve missions in concert with the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, others serve agencies apart from Synodical structure. The theological study of 'God's mission' contributes to the scriptural knowledge of the student. Students discover God's worldview and His cross-cultural churches of the first century. The project provides assistance to the pastor in carrying out his ministerial task of Word and Sacrament. It increases awareness of mission challenges within the community, the Circuit, the District and the Synod. Foreign and local missions receive the benefit of the congregation's total participation in the undertaking. The research method was to conduct open-ended interviews with leaders in churches, mission agencies, and foundations in order to build a philosophy of giving large financial grants. The research discloses that giving is best done through partnerships that are relational in nature. Three levels of strategic importance are delineated.
