Included in the goals were 1) providing theological, missiological and practical foundations, and 2) suggesting a process for church planting.  The methodology used was 1) to gather material for the resource book, 2) to evaluate the material, 3) to develop the book, and 4) to begin the ongoing process of evaluation. The purpose of this project was to discover factors that contribute to the resiliency and retention of missionaries who have gone through traumatic events in their missionary career in Africa and yet continue to serve there.  This qualitative study used narrative methodology and involved 35 interviews with missionaries who had experienced various traumas.  Four factors that respondents brought into their trauma event were: a strong personal conviction, a preparedness from birth, words from God, and sturdy relationships.  Four factors which emerged from the trauma were experiencing the keeper side of God, hearing authoritative leadership voices, quickly finding new ministry foci, and benefiting from functional networks. The project director researched demographics, interviewed national pastors and international missionaries, studied cultural nuances, and accumulated other data in order to understand the cultural and religious context in which a new church would be planted. From this collected data, the project director developed a strategy that involved the usage of a team approach to planting a new church. The International Mission Board regional leadership for Brazil decided to delay any action on the strategy developed for this project because of logistical problems related to the fact that the region was in the midst of a major transition. The Eastern and Western South America Regions were joined to form the South American Region. The leader is often overworked, under-resourced, and overwhelmed at the multiple challenges of ministry leadership.  The place of Scripture is seen as integral to leadership style, form, and substance.
