Phenomenology was the research methodology used which revealed that hip hoppers commonly experience (1) their ability to relate to hip hop artists; (2) the opportunity for self-expression; (3) the influence of the music on behavior and mood; and (4) the respect for authenticity on the part of the hip hop artist. The project consisted of five sessions with the young adult choir of Pendleton Street Baptist Church (Greenville, SC) in a retreat setting.  The group answered questionnaires and discussed how certain types of music met their spiritual needs and how it could be used to meet those of their generation.  The study concluded that hymnody, classical music and contemporary Christian music best met the needs of this particular group.
