It contains two sections. The first deals with some foundational matters such as developing an interpretive approach to the material and evaluating some of the rich resources available for preaching from these narratives.  The second major section focuses specifically on the Samuel narrative.  The contents of the major units are summarized, important interpretive elements are noted, and suggestions for how one might preach various texts are given. The sermon was seen as a literary art form and focused on elements like the use of story, metaphor, evocative symbol, and mythic language.  It used a questionnaire to examine the responses people make to sermons.
