Updike's theology--which is experienced rather than stated overtly--is useful in a culture which doubts dogmatics. It is intentional in aiming to enable discernible growth in people's lives.  Theologically this was done by drawing upon contemporary theology as story. Educationally this was done by adapting an experiential learning approach to teaching biblical material.
