It evaluates the process using materials developed for ten sessions and the use of 'A Religious Attitudes Inventory', by William E Crane and Henry Coffer, Jr.  Fourteen persons from First United Methodist Church, Wellsville, New York form the small group for this project.  Participants are encouraged to share their life stories using Biblical storytelling as a paradigm. Storytelling workshops were conducted in which the participants learned biblical stories, reflected theologically about those stories and related the stories to their personal lives.  The stories then were shared with other members of the congregation. Three such theological presuppositions are isolated.  The five novels were read and discussed by a group of laypersons who had difficulty in perceiving Updike's theological intent.  The study concludes that while the works of Updike help provide meaning for preaching, they are no panacea for the preaching task.
