The role allows her to bring to her chaplaincy her many years of experience working as a registered nurse. She is seeking to establish the new role in a way that affirms and incorporates all of her nursing education, knowledge and experience as the background for this new chaplain role. The study includes one hundred staff nurses at a medical center in central California in which the risk of compassion fatigue was measured prior to intervention.  The intervention included eight hours of workshop and three follow-up sessions in which steps to reduce compassion fatigue were introduced. There were twenty-two participants in the intervention and every participant indicated in the post workshop measurement a significant reduction in compassion fatigue risk. The emphasis was upon supplementing conventional components of stress-management by allowing spirituality to influence perception of untoward events. the bias is that each individual possesses a spiritual core, and therefore, any effort to manage stress minus such an emphasis is truncated, and with limited effectiveness. The relational nature nature of the concepts of imago Dei and compassion provide theological justification and sufficient grounds for a nonsectarian approach in a secular environment. Using the qualitative research method, Grounded Theory, the project collected data through individual interviews with eight staff physicians, six house staff, and seven nurses. All interviewees acknowledged that overtreatment of dying patients makes working in an Intensive Care Unit difficult. House staff acknowledged feelings of failure at the death of their patients. Staff physicians acknowledged that it is easier to continue treating than to make a decision to stop, thus avoiding difficult conversations or ethical decisions. Didactics covered three listening approaches: reminiscing, reality orientation, validation therapy; and three theories of aging: continuity, disengagement, age stratification.  Other teaching methods: role play, family interviews, one-on-one visitation.  Conclusion synopsis: The African-American women who had made a career choice in LTC demonstrated greater compassion and were naturally 'person-centered' when 'task
