The author argues that in order for nurses to deliver comprehensive, holistic care of persons with cancer, nurse educators must modify their curricula and clinical training programs.  She urges educators to include a historical perspective of who nurses have been throughout the history of the Christian church, encourage spiritual self-exploration and training in their students, and reclaim the work of the forerunner of spiritual care in nursing, Florence Nightingale. Nursing plays a critically important role in the delivery of patient spiritual care.  Drawing on both the history and literature of nursing and the descriptive statistical study of clinical nurses and nursing students, the project makes recommendations for clinical and education nursing sectors.  The descriptive study was designed to provide insight to demographic, educational, religious, and spiritual practices as related to the following dimensions of spiritual care: awareness, attitude, practice, and resource support.  Respondents indicated that spiritual care is important and that the practice of spiritual care tended to be more frequent among the theologically conservative, those who engage in personal spiritual practices and the older, more experienced nurse. With emphasis on Christian value-oriented education and counseling the participants in the project were provided the opportunity to grow not only in clinical knowledge, but in theological and spiritual knowledge as well.  Control and experimental groups were involved.  Six one-hour training sessions and small group discussions were held. There was a significant decrease in death anxiety and uncomfortableness in sharing with others on the subject of death and dying. Specifically, the dissertation pursues the question: what benefits, possibilities, barriers, and limitations need to be considered for interdisciplinary ministry collaboration to be fostered between faith community (parish) nurses and faith group leaders in promoting a renewal of both faith and health in times of transition?  Data was gathered over five years. The material will assist nurses in the recognition of and response to the spiritual concerns of patients. Chapter Two examined the theological and biblical dimensions of the spiritual care of patients.  Chapter Three presented a psychology of the spiritual care of the patient, focusing on the key role of the nurse. The emphasis was placed upon referral to the Department of Pastoral Care. Chapter Four described the process of assembling a Spiritual Care Notebook to serve as a resource for nurses and to be placed on each nursing unit at BHET.  The final chapter was an evaluation and conclusion of the project.
