From the Great Commission of Matt. 28:18-20 disciples are mandated to teach relational Christian education. Historically church leadership has been negligent in understanding this mandate. As derived from the Great Commandment in Matt. 22:35-40, Christian education is to teach obedience based on relations more than regulations. Much damage is done to the cause of Christ by internal conflict over authority and submission issues, especially in the North American Protestant sending faith mission boards. This thesis seeks to lay out a beginning working biblical theology of followership. Its conclusion is that Christian believers are called more to followership than leadership and a proper understanding of submission and obedience can aid greatly in the worldwide spread of the gospel. The thesis argues that the development and implementation of a biblical theology of submission and obedience will result in healthier, more sustaining, and effective missionaries and ministries. To illustrate such a statement, it will look at the early Society of Jesus under St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Moravian Brethren at Herrnhut under Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf. Each will be explored as to their history, missionary movement and effectiveness, early documents, and spiritual practices. At the end of the study, ten recommendations will be presented to modern Protestant faith mission boards in order to help address the submission and authority issues they face."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129905521491968,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:08.243Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:55:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:50:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ed983dab-c7e2-45c6-90de-182d8ed5150e","accessControl_ssim":["eaad0ed3-2024-43b9-b67a-b6be4a8d1c1f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Christ-centered motivations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:55:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:55:08Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dfef81c4-967b-4778-947d-a5a15c7bd041"],"hasLease_ssim":["5bbac245-392a-489e-b57f-6ee7837876d9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jimmy Agan"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Olan Stubbs"],"keyword_tesim":["Preaching, Reformed"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Obedience","Preaching","Reformed Church in America"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to understand the challenges of preaching Christ-centered sermons while using all of the motives for Christian obedience that the Bible uses. The Bible uses many different motivations to move Christians towards obedience, such as the promise of rewards and the threat of consequences. Some of these motives do not seem 'Christ-centered' to some at first glance and thus are often neglected by so called 'Christ-centered' preachers. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with five pastors in the Reformed Church in America. The review of literature and analysis of the five interviews focused on three key areas of motivations in preaching. This spiritual growth manifested itself in greater obedience to Christ and His teachings."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Beeson Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["15a18942-6151-49a8-8979-cd138c6b47cc"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127517606707200,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:45:10.950Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:29:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:59:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cd641ba7-a675-4548-8e7a-7134f7886abd","accessControl_ssim":["906d856c-2d16-4d14-a187-fbd9a230067b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Retelling the story of Shim Cheong: revisiting the concept of sacrifice and theology of the cross"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:29:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:01:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["da7027a4-0b74-49e4-8b53-e591e14e1679"],"hasLease_ssim":["ddc9f76a-167f-40f8-914d-fc6a1682df79"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Kathleen J Greider"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Soomee Kim"],"keyword_tesim":["Feminist theology"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Theology of the cross","Self-realization","Folklore, Korean","Narrative theology","Theology","Self-sacrifice","Obedience"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project attempts to formulate a valid narrative theology that serves the needs of Korean-American women. Because stories and storytelling are integral parts of our psychology, narrative theology offers a particularly powerful way of illustrating and teaching important Christian doctrine. It is important to note that stories should never be summarized or reduced to a 'core meaning' when used for teaching or pastoral care and counseling, as this runs the risk of allowing the storyteller's own views and prejudices to overpower the deeper meaning of the story itself. For this reason, all narrative theology should be based on the unabridged, unadulterated story in its purest form. Theologies of the cross, by emphasizing the suffering and death of Jesus, run the risk of condoning abusive behavior and portray Jesus Christ as a figure who intentionally seeks suffering and death as part of the act of redemption, minimizing the responsibility of the repressive society that demanded his death. By emphasizing obedience to the Lord, these theologies can serve to maintain an oppressive status quo at the cost of innocent life. The project argues that a more healthy theology can be formulated based on the psychoanalytical theory of individuation, as formulated by Carl G. Jung. Bu using the example of 'The Story of Shim Cheong,' the dissertation shows how traditional, life-affirming tales can be distorted to serve the ends of a repressive patriarchal society. Sacrifice is not something we can demand a person to offer solely for the benefit of others. A true sacrifice can only come from someone who has reached the goal of individuation. It must be motivated by love and always serves to strengthen and enrich the giver. In that light, a new definition of sacrifice is formulated."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132170484449280,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:08.279Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:07:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:52:19Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"104d57ad-fede-4610-81a8-df6dda2e6695","accessControl_ssim":["88f34db3-cc2c-45d6-bb3e-da03e4d86788"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The master's mandate: a discipleship manual for those who desire to become faithful and obedient followers of Jesus Christ"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:07:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:35:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7765d98c-e698-49b7-b9c6-29b5b28f92fb"],"hasLease_ssim":["997fcb31-8474-4dfb-87f8-0c60d5c9513e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David Eckman"],"year_tesim":["1997"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James N Price"],"publisher_tesim":["Western Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian life--Biblical teaching","Obedience","Theology","Christian life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes a discipleship manual and resource for persons who want to become fully devoted followers of Christ, emphasizing a New Testament framework for Christian obedience.
