The participants were religiously diverse, including some unaffiliated with either a church or synagogue. Using a questionnaire, residents were interviewed regarding their sources of hope and comfort, religious participation, spiritual practices, psychological age and fear of death. The women used story-linking to connect familiar stories of their friends with biblical scriptures and with writings by Mechthild of Madgeburg.
