The thesis of this project is that Scripture memory and recitation within public worship can provide pastors of mainline congregations a way to facilitate fresh encounters with Scripture as a living Word. Using ethnographic listening practices, the study investigates the effect of Scripture recitation as a form of proclamation in one mainline Protestant congregation over the course of two years. He developed a 'system' that helped actors perform in an authentic and truthful way. The author examined how Stanislavski's observations can be applied to preaching preparation. Five key areas were applied in the study; personal and corporate observation, using the 'circles of attention', deep study of texts used when preparing to preach, relaxation and authentic personal communication. The fifth element applied specific Stanislavskian terms - superobjective, bit and through-flow - in the construction of the homily. The challenge of developing leaders becomes more complex as many of them are oral learners. One of the ways to face the challenge is to use oral methods in training leaders. This thesis describs the opportunities and challenges in Bihar, India. It surveys mission history, particularly focused on the Bihar Reach-Out Network. It builds a biblical and theological foundation for consideration of orality. The project director researched worldview and its impact on mission strategy. He further researched orality and orality-based mission strategies. He devised an equipping workshop to introduce a group of church members to the concepts of worldview and orality, and to Bible storying as a culturally appropriate orality-based mission strategy for developing house church leaders among the internally displaced people of Colombia. The project utilized several evaluative measures, including an expert-evaluated annotated bibliography, and expert critique of the lesson plans, pre- and post-workshop questionnaires, and a workshop evaluation form. The project director increased his knowledge of worldview and its implications for mission strategy. He also increased his understanding of orality and of Bible storying as a contextually-appropriate orality-based missions methodology. The author produced a handbook for public Scripture reading that assists pastors, Bible colllege students, and ministry professionals, which is a result of research and assessment of oral Scripture reading skills. The desired outcome is that the Scriptures will be read expressively, accurately, and powerfully. Yet, most Christian workers still use literate methods even when working in oral contexts. This research focuses on biblical storytelling among oral learners. The primary research strategy was the multiplication of storytellers through intentional training and the collection of verbatim reports of their field experiences. Storytelling was found to be superior for knowledge transfer and for bypassing resistance to the gospel, and consequently more than 200 new congregations were planted. However, the author discovered that switching to a method geared to predominantly postmodern hearers can leave more traditional hearers feeling 'left behind.' Over the sermons in this project he explored postmodern preaching methods, but also checked in with more traditional hearers. Data was gathered by survey and interviews in a group setting. For small churches, there are ways that we can preach to new generations so that none are 'lost' or 'left behind.' This thesis discusses variety in preaching styles as a way to be inclusive for all those worshiping in smaller congregations. The thesis promotes postmodern preaching methods to reach younger members, while advocating for variety in preaching styles that take into account the variety among
