What would it take for a congregation to experience that type of revitalization?  Will a 'transformed' leader produce a 'transformed' church?  Can the traditional disciplines of prayer, reading scripture, and experiencing true solitude and true community make a difference in the lives of busy, proud, 'know it all' Christians?  I am convinced that significant spiritual transformation is possible in the church today -- and I have already begun to experience it at First Presbyterian Church.  The most critical factor so far in transformation for this church has been personal transformation in the life of its pastor.  This project attempted to promote spiritual transformation in the church by recognizing and supporting a continued process of transformation in the life of the pastor and by utilizing a family systems approach to change. Major steps included self-awareness and living into the person God has created; living into the particularities of one's giftedness and situation; utilizing long-held spiritual traditions of prayer, solitude, community and spiritual direction; living as a non-anxious presence and recognizing that one individual's change within the system forces the system itself to change. In each is an element of uncontrollable mystery: one's vulnerability at font and table, one's lack of control in transitional moments, and one's chutzpah in preaching God's Word.  She concluded that, in times of transition, the preacher should focus on the goodness of God and the mysteries of God, rather than trying to force a premature resolution. Scripture records extended families and clans living together showing respect, appreciation and love for each one's contribution regardless of sex, age, or position.  Our current century has experienced a dramatic change in lifestyle, resulting in a dearth of births and a noticeable increase in longevity in the life of seniors.  The demographic change has institutions within society struggling to cope with possible solutions.  The local church in particular has experienced an aging congregation which of necessity demands restructuring in programs.  The author, himself a senior, has researched statistics, church policies, and interviewed church leaders that have prepared for the change. More specifically, the researcher studied the leadership of Rev. Young Choon Chang, the senior pastor of the Korean American Presbyterian Church of Queens (KAPCQ) and the impact of his leadership on the growth of KAPCQ.  This research employed qualitative study methods with information obtained through interviews, surveys, documents, and observations.  The results of this research are stated below.  First, we know that in the late 20th century a fresh wave of leaders transformed nations and organizations with a style of leadership that recent leadership research has defined as transformational leadership.  This newly defined leadership model promises to change the very essence of organizations that under inefficient leadership had not looked beyond the status quo. Second, although the term 'transformational leadership' was coined by James MacGregor Burns in 1978, the researcher found that the idea of transformational leadership originated in the concept of man's creation in the image of God and the creation mandate in the Bible. (3) Transition must be an ongoing process at all levels of the organization. (4) Transition takes time. (5) The new leader's job description and profile must be developed. (6) The process must be well-defined. (7) Determine the role of the former CEO within the organization. (8) The respective functions of the board and the new CEO must be defined. Through three case studies, strategies and methods were discovered.  What was surprising to the researcher is that they have discovered and used them unintentionally.  They intentionally applied biblical instruction in their relationships, but they did not do this intentionally to transition generational leadership.  What can be deduced is that though the generational transfer of leadership was unintentional, it was successful.
