By studying the contemporary and historical literature on the subject, examining the Scriptures, including Paul's thorn in the flesh, and conducting interviews with seasoned preachers who themselves battle chronic pain, the author identifies some common challenges and unique opportunities that those who preach in pain face as they seek to minister effectively. The practical aspects of this project began with a presentation of case histories. An analysis of these cases revealed that these patients' histories contained eight 'pain themes.'  The spiritual care checklists (an instrument) used as a counseling tool with the pain patients were compared with those used with a control group of medical/surgical patients. It gives a working definition of healthy spirituality.  Four case studies address the significance of individual values, guilt, anger, and grief as they relate to anxiety and pain.  The theological rationale for the project is based on Paul Tillich's threefold description of existential anxiety. The study indicates that chronic pain is more often the result of life history than medical history.
