The project was designed to teach parents some basic principles of Christian nurture, from a Wesleyan, theological perspective, informed by developmental theory. The child-rearing motifs of John Wesley were taught within the structural-developmental framework of James W Fowler's faith development theory, to inform parents of some of the theological and psychological factors necessary for a more informed nurture of Christian faith in their children. The project was carried out through a series of seminars conducted at the First Church of the Nazarene in Stillwater, Oklahoma. A curriculum was developed and a four-phase process of recruitment was developed and followed in order to test the thesis in one local United Methodist church.  Foster parents were recruited and began to function.  The theology undergirding the project, including a discussion of the church-state issue, is included. Their effectiveness would be enhanced if they examined their faith journeys and forged a cooperative partnership with their church.  The method of study was a combination of a learning-support group of parents who met to share needs and concerns and to test resources developed with a survey of selected parents in three different-sized United Methodist congregations.
