The purpose was achieved by training parents in both cognitive and behavioral skills.  The project was conducted in light of the following assumptions: 1) children need guidance; 2) the most effective teachers for children are parents; 3) the best time to learn is childhood; and 4) the natural environment for learning is the home.  The project was developed in cooperation with couples whose children were ages birth through early adolescence. The hypothesis of the research project was that if a church offers a biblically balanced and sound course of training for its parents who have preadolescent children, there will be an observable increase in the self-esteem scores of the children whose parents undergo training.  The author conducted pre-test and post-test measurements of the self-esteem of preadolescednts whose parents were trained.  He compared these scores with the scores of a control group whose parents received no training.
