It reflects on the way the harsh history of the anthracite area has shaped the attitudes and actions of members of the United Methodist Churches in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. In this respect special reference is made to the coal mines, the Molly Maguires, institutional violence, ethnic diversity, poverty, the railroads, economic depression, and local church history. Using a case study method, the project reflects upon the practice of a gentle style of ministry in various pastoral settings and its contribution toward overcoming obstacles to health and healing in these congregations. These settings include situations of resistance, distrust, and abuse of power. Boundary-setting and encounters with the demonic are also discussed. The main thesis of the project is gentleness creates a supportive, gracious and sacred space in which individuals as well as congregations can feel free and safe enough to let down their protective defenses and receive the healing and health which God offers. In the sacred space created by gentleness, God is at work to heal and to enable individuals and congregations to discern their power to overcome abuse in non-abusive ways. Gentleness, as gracious respect, enables people to change their attitudes and behavior to one another, God, and the community. This gentle leadership style has the potential to heal not only church congregations but also communities and nations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"identifier_tesim":["https://www.proquest.com/dissertations-theses/gentleness-pastoral-care-as-way-bringing-healing/docview/304755818/se-2"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873271607197696,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:52:56.371Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:06:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:05:29Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d6a38a71-f50f-4911-a9da-7c0d625ea45e","accessControl_ssim":["113a127a-7af7-429e-968b-1604a61118d1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Hope for overcoming family of origin deficiencies"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:06:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:15:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f534a1d4-ab8d-4793-b83f-fc894e54533e"],"hasLease_ssim":["f48109ed-492f-4c79-aaf6-608de30827dd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy John Porter"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Interpersonal relations","Pastoral counseling","Marriage counseling","Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis of this project is that there is hope for overcoming family of origin deficiencies through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, the application of scripture, and an integration of psychological theories and therapeutic principles. Through ignorance, lack of training, or misinterpretation of scripture, many pastors encourage unhealthy submission to abusive spouses, offer inappropriate Christian platitudes, and advocate for the 'sacredness of the family' at the expense of a woman's health and life -- compelling women to stay in abusive marriages, thus hindering them from receiving the help they need. Recent research indicates that many of these pastors agree that they are ill-equiped to minister to abused Christian women, and some genuinely desire training and ministry resources to help the women in their congregations. The data suggests that familiarity with FP enhances the view of FPC as a sound and vital component of explicit reliance on Jesus for the healing of children."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["beb93775-0b27-4cc6-9fb0-f2ad62e68517"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130896712073216,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:53.516Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:18:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:32:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e42fd8bf-f5cf-4939-b05f-f51cd4b640b4","accessControl_ssim":["019e78b6-b557-4a01-9cce-f206859c3671"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A process of reflective consultation with pastors of multiple parishes"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:18:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:39:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["78f9c0a8-8907-4dc2-a94a-a289a7b63f04"],"hasLease_ssim":["bbaa8b09-71e7-471f-8ff2-fa80e815d419"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["University of Saint Mary of the Lake"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond J Webb"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kathleen L Wiskus"],"publisher_tesim":["Mundelein Seminary, University of Saint Mary of the Lake"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Catholic Church","Pastoral counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Fewer priests available to minister to a growing number of faithful has strained the Catholic Church in America. Increasingly, bishops have assigned priest as pastors to multiple parishes. This project studied the current shift in pastoral care given and pastoral care received that affects the ministers and their faith communities. The project engaged these pastors from the Diocese of Madison in a reflective consultation process on the phenomenon of pastoring multiple parishes using theological reflection. The wisdom gleaned provides insights for maintaining and enhancing the existing faith communities as well as the quality of the priests' ministry and self care."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130503551647744,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:32:38.569Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":7,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
