Should psychotherapy be conducted with parishioners?  Can psychotherapy be effective?  This project examines these issues using investigative research and systematic analysis. Psychotherapeutic principles criticize methods that compromise boundaries.  In the parochial setting dual role relationships and symbiotic drives compromise the therapist's anonymity and neutrality. The project argues that these dynamics become opportunities for interpretation and analysis.  The project proposes strategies and parameters to aid the psychotherapeutic process. None is more essential than shame.  Survivors need help in moving out from trauma and humiliation to celebrate goodness and right to joy. After presenting some psychological and theological foundations of shame, this project explores various treatment modalities and presents combined treatment (individual and group therapy with the same therapist) as a powerful tool to identify and treat shame. Clinical data prove the effectiveness of this modality. In eight-week training sessions grief ministry team members are equipped with listening skills, grief counseling skills, understanding of the grieving process, and a biblical perspective on grief that enables team members to answer some of the difficult questions that arise when people face death. Incorporating some components of wilderness therapy into a pastoral care setting should help to offer a more integrated and wholistic model of pastoral care and counseling.  The project describes a feminist understanding of sin, the sin of hiding or self-negation, and offers some suggestions about how wilderness adventure therapy might be incorporated into a more wholistic model of pastoral care and counseling. The project concentrates on a police chaplain's pastoral care of officers who experience an intense grief reaction because of their own fear of death, the close bond between officers, and the public nature of the whole process.  Grief in general, sudden violent death grief, Critical Incident Trauma, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are discussed. A qualitative research methodology was used to interview twelve women who have been clients in pastoral counseling.  The findings demonstrate that pastoral counseling does facilitate growth in women's faith lives when the process is sensitive to women's unique experience of themselves, of their relationships, and of their God.
