The method of research integrates material from the author's experience of twenty-two years of military service, thirteen years of ordained ministry, and experience from personal involvement in Adult Children of Alcoholics.  Short-term prevention methods suggested are regulating the supply of alcoholic beverages, shaping drinking practices directly, and reducing environmental risk. The acquisition and application of wisdom is perceived as fundamental in helping troubled persons. Interviews are part of the pastoral care model. The voices of victims are heard in seven interviews, direct source material for researchers. The biblical record is explored, looking first at the roots of violence evident in Scripture and, also, the seeds of hope contained therein. Directors of nine hospital-based pastoral counseling centers provided the data. As models of spiritual direction the author incorporated the work of Ignatius Loyola, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Studzinski, Gratton, Fischer, and Kelsey. Models of psychotherapy and pastoral counseling included Jung, Rogers, Oden, and Jackson. The chaplain asked fifty-two students to form nine counseling groups focusing on their interpersonal conflicts.  In six sessions they were trained to use an ethical model to resolve their conflicts.
