The research was carried out during work with several divorce support groups in a Presbyterian Church in Spokane, Washington, and a Reformed Church in America congregation in Holland, Michigan.  The purpose of the project was to help congregations establish a ministry both with and to divorced persons, and to demonstrate its consistency with the gospel.  It will help readers to understand the divorce experience both psychologically and theologically. A questionnaire was designed to gather information regarding the pastors' experiences and needs in their counseling ministry.  A learning design was created to address those needs.  Twenty pastors enrolled in the fourteen, three-hour training sessions.  The pastors' positive response and evaluation indicated a need for such training. The method of study was to develop and implement a seminar for pastors serving in the local parish.  Initially consisting of four core segments (crisis intervention, brief pastoral counseling, daily relationships with parishioners, and the pastor's own self-understanding) the content of the seminar was significantly adapted based on preliminary interviews with 130 pastors, 5 seminary professors, and 15 staff members of PC\u0026CC of Greater Washington. Elderly Jewish people were interviewed to ascertain their coping with bereavement and to see whether there is any correlation between their religious practices and their ablilty to cope with loss. Simultaneously, bereavement support groups were organized for the elderly and were co-counseled by a rabbi and social worker from the Jewish family service. A selective review of relevant literature dealing with medical, psychological, and theological facets of the disorder was conducted, and a case study was discussed.  Person-centered therapy supplemented by techniques which were congruent and appropriate from other modalities was indicated in treatment. The author analyzes this therapeutic situation by utilizing the resources of material on child abuse, the resulting pain of being abused as a child, theology, psychotherapy, and the story of Jesus meeting the woman at the well in the Gospel of John 4:7-21.  The author determines that a pastoral counselor must address and be in the process of working through his or her past abusive experiences before counseling with counselees who have also been abused as children.  The author creatively uses the images of a counseling well, water, houses, and abandoned fireplaces to bring the pain and the journey of recovery alive in this pastoral counseling setting. The results of the study indicate that in this sample, unresolved infertility negatively impacted parenting function.  Two themes that emerged from the data were denial of the difference between being a biological mother and a stepmother, and anxiety over the stability of the family constellation. The approach was an enhancement of Holland's and Henriot's 'pastoral circle.' The structure of the approach is informed by cases of abusive children.  Two case studies are offered with reflection on the approach developed and abusive children themselves.  Results showed the approach to be positive especially in combining input from theology and social sciences.  The children were noted to be unrealistic in their assessment of their relationships with other family members.
