It is a structured way of reaching out to all the members of the congregation to let them know that the church cares about them.  Built into the program is direct, personal contact with nuclear, modal, marginal, and dormant members. Along with one-to-one contact there are new fellowship opportunities designed to low for closer relationships to develop within small groups. The method of the study was to investigate several schools of therapy, theological constructs, and biblical accounts of Jesus' healing ministry to determine if these sources made use of a remedial function. When we know that God has suffered what we are suffering, we are able to be healed in our traumatic confrontations, and to grow in faith through this suffering, either to a new wholeness of life, or to live completely to the end in the face of death.  The thesis was tested in marriage counseling, in care of the dying and bereaved, and in unemployment counseling. The results show a number of differences in the role identity, in the depth or level of counseling and in the approach of the pastoral therapist. Most churches, however, need assistance in increasing the effectiveness of the congregation's ability to give care.  The writer developed a three-month training program for twelve persons to study the theology of caregiving, stages of human development, and caring skills.  Following training the trainees entered hurting situations under the writer's supervision. A group of sixteen mid-life men were administered the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale.  The group was then divided into test and control groups of eight men.  The test group met in a weekly counseling session with the author where basic relationship building skills were implemented for twelve weeks.  At the end of twelve weeks, the entire sample was again administered the Scale. The project sought through pastoral care, demonstrated in an intentional small group process, to promote theological reflection about meaningful living.  The desired effect was to know the fact of one's death to be an impetus for life. This report outlines theological and psychological bases for the concept of anticipatory grief.  Methodology entailed determination of issues the participants wanted addressed as well as delineation of the mechanics of the phenomenon of anticipatory grief.  The project showed a positive correlation between a constructive sense of anticipatory grief and a sense of meaning for life. The report outlines the different methods of confession, demonstrating their comparative value in terms of guilt resolution.
