First, there is data gathered from several week-end workshops for personal change conducted by a well-known pastoral counselor.  Second, there is a discussion of such issues as ethics in counseling, the work of the Holy Spirit, metaphors of theological importance, and a series of practical questions that deal with such issues as evangelism in counseling. Third, the work describes suggestions for pastoral identity as a result of the data collected. The six-week partnership between the Second Baptist Church of Columbus, Ohio and the Hospice at Riverside and Grant Community Grief Program provided education, resources, and support to persons within the first year of grief related to the loss of a loved one. The collaborative preaching model was adopted, with some slight modifications, as the project model. The author interviewed ministers who began D.Min. programs in pastoral counseling. He compares interview data with the theology of Douglas John Hall and the psychology of Heinz Kohut. He concludes: a minister who enters a program of therapy training is responding to self crises and/or crises of meaning.
