An experimental method is described by which this unconscious church is revealed in a congregation.  Jung's word association technique is adapted and used to test a congregational sample.  Results reveal that half or more of the subjects in the sample gave significant responses to 14 out of the 100 words. Mathematically, this is more than would be expected to occur by chance.  It is concluded that this pattern of 14 words demonstrates the presence of the unconscious church. Analysis of the stimulus words and the words given in response to those stimulus words reveals that this unconscious church is concerned with relationships with God and others. It evidences a struggle between good and evil, between the archetypal symbol of the hero and that of the betrayer, between the ego and the shadow. The family of the alcoholic was seldom seen at the clinic on other than superficial levels; even such limited observation demonstrated a vicious circle of anxiety and frustration.  Parish ministers and family doctors often come in contact with alcoholism but fail to recognize it.  This paper defines alcoholism, the nature of the disease, the effect on the individual and his family and the social and economic cost of it for our nation. It focuses on the specific alcoholic and his history together with the growth of the disease, seeks to pinpoint causes with reference to its early growth in the family of reference and its fruition in the family of procreation, discusses alcoholic life patterns in the marriage relationship and its effects on the children. Recognition of the need for church ministry to this group prompted this study.  Literature from the marriage enrichment movement was studies.  A more intense study of two enrichment programs, National Marriage Encounter and the Association of Couples for Marriage Enrichment (ACME), included the examination of their manuals, newsletters and periodicals.  Experiential data was obtained from existing literature as well as the writer's and his wife's involvement in marriage enrichment programs.  The writer personally interviewed national leaders of both National Marriage Encounter and ACME.  A transcription of these interviews is included.  The marriage enrichment movement can provide important resources, such as programs, literature, and theory, to church leaders for ministry to recently married couples. The programs in both National Marriage Encounter and ACME could be adapted for use with newlyweds and two other programs developed specifically for first year married couples are presented. It is designed to be an instrument for supervisor-therapist communication concerning the investigation, enrichment, and remedial treatment of marital relations.  A model is presented that is organized in terms of three sets of relationships in the supervision process of: 1) supervisor-therapist, 2) therapist-client, and 3) supervisor:therapist::therapist:client.  The study reviews professional identity and the scope and function of pastoral care.
