The skill training included is in the context of seeking growth in the ability to claim deepened identity understandings in clinical encounter. Research is coupled with the author's personal insights as an active churchman with obsessional tendencies.  The project explores the nature and origin of such a personality and contrasts it with the personality informed by a mature religious sentiment.  In this light, the author evaluates the pastoral ministry of preaching and counseling. The author reviewed pertinent literature -- sociological, psychological and theological -- and used questionnaires and interviews in her research.  The main questions addressed the clergywomen's ages, the touching in their families of origin and their use of touch in ministry. Each woman reported instances of therapeutic and non-therapeutic touching and the response of the parishioner-patient-client as well as their own responses to these instances. The beginning point of the study is the psychological and spiritual suffering of the alienated psyche in the archetypal wasteland, a painful condition in which the individual feels separated and alienated from his or her own unconscious depths, from other people in human community, and from a seemingly destructive and unavailable God.  This archetypal experience is viewed as the a priori condition for the healing of psyche and soul, a transformation which occurs through the establishment of a redeeming link with an infinite source of wisdom, guidance and blessing called, variously, the self-archetype or the greater personality in psychological language, or the mysterium tremendum or wholly other in theological language. The dream's significance as an avenue of revelation and guidance in biblical history is demonstrated.  Freud and Jung's rediscovery of dreams' meaningfulness and their respective dream theories are discussed.  Methods of dream interpretation in the therapeutic process are presented. Types of dreams are categorized and illustrated.  A profile based on a survey and interviews of one congregation's attitudes are presented.
