The first part of the project was an examination of the meaning of reconciliation followed by a study of the meaning of the sacrament of Holy Communion in relation to reconciliation.  The second part was a fourteen session study with leaders of a Presbyerian congregation.  The group planned three communion services for corporate worship and surveyed the congregation following the services. Part one analyzes the influence of the rite's theological anthropology and asceticism in ministering to the sick. Part two describes the five-session, in-service learning workshop. A study of the reigns of Saul, David and Solomon provides models for the exercise of authority among the people of God. Special emphasis is placed on the paradoxical notion of success: Solomon, the most 'successful' of the Israelite kings, proved unable to preserve the united monarchy for his successors.  Reflection on this fact, together with reference to management literature and reports of a series of getting-acquainted meetings in a new parish setting, lead to the conclusion that precariousness, vulnerability and a sense of being an exile are essential components of effective and authentic parish congregation can plan for a year's ministry with a high degree of intentionality.  This was accomplished by: (1) reflection upon the mission of the church in light of changing environmental needs; (2) holding a Mission Sunday to involve the community in formulating a current statement of mission and sense of corporate identity; (3) conducting a planning retreat to set priorities, objectives, and strategies; and (4) evaluation of processes and results. It was based on the theological affirmations that true preaching extends the work of the Incarnation; that worship provides experiences including: providence, faith, grace, repentance, communion, vocation, and an awareness of the holy; and that the thrust of all pastoral work, including preaching, is the communication of the love and acceptance of God.  Ten people met for an hour each Sunday, discussed the sermon and reviewed the Scripture for the next week.  A feedback form was given to the congregation each week.  The results were more effective communication, better constructed sermons, and more effective integration of preaching and pastoral care. Each of the steps is viewed in the thesis.  Some of the theological/biblical themes that emerge are: pneumatology and faith, conversion/spiritual transformation, confession, reconciliation and forgiveness, justification by grace, sanctification, freedom, baptism, prayer and meditation, worship, spiritual awakening, evangelism, and discipleship. Research is gathered from existing data and excerpts from over 30 taped interviews with persons who are either recovering alcoholics or are CD counselors in a treatment program and have some affiliation with the Christian faith. They were asked as to any theological/biblical themes they perceived in the twelve steps.  The intent of this thesis is to assist in the construction of bridges for communication and understanding between those in AA and those in the church. It begins with an overview of the Oxford Group Movement and its 8 points and explores the birth of AA looking specifically at the lives of the co-founders.  The thesis concludes with examples of how an understanding of the 12 steps can be used in
